Mary Robinson's lecture took place on November 23rd 2010, and focused on reshaping the debate on climate change to focus on justice in the developing world and how addressing the issue of climate change must address the issue of justice also. According to the Mary Robinson Foundation - Climate Justice: "The debate on climate change is becoming tense and obscure. It is being lost. It is time to change it - and the change means talking about two things: what we can do right now, and who will suffer if we fail." The lecture was the eleventh in an ongoing series organised by the EPA. Leaders issue Call to Action on the Millennium Development Goals Gordon Brown, Bill Gates, Bono, Queen Rania, Ban Ki-Moon, Klaus Schwab, Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, and John Chambers have issued a joint statement at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting vowing to make 2008 a turning point in the fight against poverty. The world is facing a development emergency, they said, and we pledge to work together to help the world get back on track to meet the MDGs.

Medha Patkar is a social activist who has led the struggle for the people affected by the controversial Sardar Sarovar Project on the Narmada river in Gujarat, India. She founded the Narmada Bachoao Andolan and National Alliance of People's movements and is recipient of numerous awards including the Goldman Environmental Prize, Amnesty International's Human Rights Defender's Award and the BBC's Green Ribbon Award.

United Nations, New York, 30 September 2009 - The Security Council today demanded that all parties to armed conflict take immediate action to protect civilians, including women and children, from all forms of sexual violence, and urged greater measures by States and the United Nations to combat this scourge. In a unanimously adopted resolution, the Council also requested that Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appoint a Special Representative to provide coherent and strategic leadership to address sexual violence in armed conflict. In addition, the 15-member body called on the UN chief to identify and take appropriate measures to deploy rapidly a team of experts to situations of particular concern with respect to sexual violence in armed conflict. NIAMEY, Niger, 17 July 2008 -- The latest UNICEF-World Health Programme Joint Monitoring Programme report focuses on sanitation improvements. The report finds that while more people are drinking water from safe sources, far too few are using improved sanitation. Niger has one of the lowest rates of improved sanitation, and problems remain with water supply there. Unsafe water and poor sanitation and hygiene are among the underlying causes of Niger's high child mortality rate. Water-borne diseases account for nearly 20 per cent of deaths in children under the age of five here. Less than 45 per cent of the population has access to clean water, and less than 10 per cent to adequate sanitation. These statistics are well below Niger's targets for achieving the Millennium Development Goals. UNICEF is supporting the Government of Niger by working with communities to improve access to safe water and household water treatment and sanitation. By raising awareness of good hygiene practices such as hand washing and using family latrines, the country can prevent diarrhoea and reduce child deaths. United Nations, New York, 24 August 2010 - The United Nations is dispatching a senior staff member to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as senior officials express outrage at the recent rape and assault of more than 150 civilians by rebels based in the remote and troubled east of the country. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and his Special Representative for Sexual Violence in Conflict, Margot Wallström, condemned the attacks, saying they demonstrated the widespread level and systematic nature of sexual violence in the DRC. Mr. Ban and Ms. Wallström urged that the perpetrators be brought to justice and pledged to help authorities in the DRC to fight impunity against sexual and gender-based violence. Millenium Development Goals for 2015 In the year 2000, 189 leaders from around the world met at the historic Millenium Summit in New York. According to the then Secretary-General of the UN, Kofi Annan, the UNs role for the next millenium will be crucial; making it a focal point for joint efforts in a world that presents worrisome statistics that endanger the perpetuation of generations to come. • 1.2 billion people live with less than US$1.00 per day. • 800 million people are malnourished. • 153 million children are below their ideal weight. • 115 million children are not enrolled in school. • 97% of these children are in developing countries. • 64% of the worlds illiterate population are women. • 80% of the worlds refugee population are women. • 60% of children not enrolled in primary school are women. • Every year 10 million children die of preventable diseases. • 30 thousand deaths per day. • Anually, 500 mil thousand women die when giving birth or during their pregnancy. • In Africas Sub-Saharan region 1 in 16 women die in these conditions. • In countries of the OCDE this same proportion is of only 1 in every 2800 women. • In the year 2000, 22 million people had died of AIDS. • 13 million children lost their parents to the HIV virus. • 40 million people live with the virus. • Anually, 300 million cases of malaria are detected. • Anually 60 million people are infected by tuberculosis. • In the year 2000 1 billion people in developing countries didnt have access to drinkable water. • 2.4 billion people didnt have access to sanitary services. • 14% of the worlds population (in the developed world) produces 44% of the yearly CO2 total. • US$ 100 billion are necessary for acheiving the MDGs. • 0.5 of the GDP of developed countries is necessary for raising that amount. The result of this meeting? A commitment, with a set deadline; 2015. Erradicate extreme poverty and hunger. Achieve universal primary education. Promote gender equality and empower women. Reduce child mortality. Improve maternal health. Combat AIDSHIV, malaria and other diseases. Ensure environmental sustainability. Develop a global partnership for development. I CAN, YOU CAN, WE CAN!

The United Nations Human Rights Council today strongly condemned the recent violence in Libya and ordered an international inquiry into alleged abuses, while also recommending that the country's membership in the UN's top human rights body be suspended. In a resolution adopted unanimously at the end of a special session held in Geneva, the 47-member Council called on the Libyan Government to meet its responsibility to protect its population, immediately end all human rights violations, stop any attacks against civilians, and respect the popular will, aspirations and demands of its people. United Nations, New York, January 24 2011 - 2010 was one of the deadliest years for natural disasters in the past two decades and unless better preparations are put in place now, many more disasters can be expected in years to come, the UN's top disaster reduction official said today. Some 373 natural disasters claimed the lives of more than 296,800 people last year, affecting nearly 208 million and costing nearly $110 billion, according to annual data compiled by the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) of the Université catholique de Louvain in Belgium, and supported by the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), the UN body charged with helping coordinate efforts to achieve substantive reduction in disaster losses and build resilient nations and communities.
